Horton Hayes Fine Art is located at the corner of State and Queen Streets. The gallery features original works by locally and nationally recognized artists, including Mark Kelvin Horton, Shannon Runquist, Chris Groves, Nancy Hoerter, Bjorn Runquist, Michael Knoch and Larry Moore. Subject matter in the gallery varies and includes landscapes, still-life, figurative works and architectural depictions rendered in oil, pastel or watercolor. While many of the pieces depict Lowcountry scenes and themes, one may also find a range of images including mountain and western scenes, European subjects and a variety of works inspired by the diverse experiences, surroundings and travels of our artists.

This year, Horton Hayes Fine Art will be paired with La Fourchette, a tiny bistro located on Upper King Street. La Fourchette’s dining focuses on being authentically French — from the signature cassoulet to a great wine list featuring distinctive French regional selections. Many come back for their seasonal specials and the signature frites, deep-fried in duck fat. Always packed and lively, the tight seating and loud conversation exemplify the Parisian ideal. La Fourchette is the go-to option for authentic French bistro dining in Charleston, however this restaurant could easily be in Paris.

Kevin Kelly chooses the wines—predominately French and esoteric, and they befit the authentic fare. French owner Perig  Goulet boasts of his country pâté, a recipe handed down from his grand-mère. Other favorites include duck salad, scallops sautéed in cognac, and shrimp in a leek sauce; a delicious addition to any event.

On November 5, 2010, Horton Hayes Fine Art will open its much anticipated two-person exhibition entitled Light and Life: Tuscany and Florence, featuring paintings of Tuscany and Florence by Mark Kelvin Horton and Chris Groves.  An opening reception with the artists will take place that evening from 5:00-8:00pm in conjunction with the Charleston Fine Art Dealers’ Association’s Fine Art Weekend.

This series of landscapes, streetscapes and vistas of Florence is inspired by the artists’ recent trip to Italy.  The exhibition offers views of bright vineyards and cypress groves, enchanting villas set among the Tuscan hills and intimate alleyways of Florence.  Groves and Horton provide two distinct fresh and contemporary impressions of these images of enduring beauty.

Horton and Groves share an admiration for the light, life and historical artistic influences of Italy.  “I was especially inspired by the Tuscan countryside, the beauty of the shapes and colors and the way the fields, hills and farmhouses all fell into wonderful compositions”, says Horton.  Having studied in Florence years ago, Groves was eager to return with a deeper appreciation of his skills and abilities of interpretation.  “Catching the light of Italy has always intrigued me as an artist”, notes Groves.  “I was inspired to reconnect with a place I am grounded to emotionally and I hope these paintings help the viewer to see Italy through artist’s eyes.

Horton Hayes Fine Art in downtown Charleston is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Chris Groves entitledReflection.  An opening reception will take place on Thursday, September 30, from 5-8pm and the show will run through October 24th.

Hanging Fruit by Chris Groves

This grouping is inspired by both Groves’ fascination with the reflective nature of light as well as the contemplative sensibility he aims to elicit through his work.   The pieces demonstrate Groves’ keen attention to the illumination of the objects and landscapes he portrays as he captures the angle and intensity of light and the specific luster of surfaces with exquisite precision.

Groves studied painting at the Florence Academy in Italy.   He excels in the Tonal style of painting which employs a limited palette of mostly neutral hues from which the value ranges of colors are developed.  The technique builds layers of atmosphere, texture and depth in a painting.  Groves works hang in numerous private and corporate collections.

Horton Hayes Fine Art is now showing the work of Adele Earnshaw and Jason Tako.  These two accomplished artists draw their inspiration from nature and their paintings reflect wildlife oriented themes.

Adele’s paintings have been exhibited at the Natural History Museum in New York and have toured Japan and Sweden with museum exhibitions.  A native of New Zealand, Earnshaw was selected to design the first three stamps for the New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Stamp Program.  In 2000 she was invited to participate in the Ecoart Conference and Exhibition in Taiwan where her work was exhibited at the Museum of Natural History in Taipei.  Earnshaw currently resides in Sedona, Arizona.  To view Earnshaw’s available work, please see www.hortonhayes.com.

Born and raised in rural Minnesota, a love for wildlife and landscape came naturally to Jason Tako.   At a young age, Tako’s teachers and peers discovered that he possessed a knack and desire for the visual arts. He went on to college and earned his degree in Applied Visual Arts.  His teacher, Bara Arens, encouraged Tako to pursue a career in fine art.  Jason has a deep passion for the north woods and prairies.  One of the things Jason enjoys most about his art is painting from life and going out into nature to gather experiences that will later be brushed onto canvas.  Jason Tako currently resides in Dover, Pennsylvania.  To see Tako’s available work, please visit www.hortonhayes.com.
